bulletSection C: Applied Basic Sciences

I have found that there is not a large amount of high quality online materials for Clinical Anaesthesia. The material linked on this page is at least worth a look but really is not generally of the same standard as published material in books and journals.

Section A: Subspeciality Anaesthesia

Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia

Few resources available online

ENT Anaesthesia

Few resources available online

Eye Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia for Opthalmic Surgery : Part 1: Regional Techniques by Andrei M. Varvinski & Roger Eltringham

Anaesthesia for Opthalmic Surgery Part 2: General Anaesthesia by Andrei Varvinski & Roger Eltringham,
'In this article the principles of general anaesthesia for eye surgery are outlined.'

Anaesthesia for Emergency Eye Surgery by Anna Wilson & Jasmeet Soar

Pain Medicine
Management of Acute Pain
Powerpoint slide presentation. Can be viewed online from the www.pain.com site

Neuroanaesthesia

Manual of Neuroanesthesia by Cleveland Waterman
Written during a 6 month fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh c.1993. Synoptic recipe-book format which I find annoying. Hypertext linked format could have been better done. Some content is dated (IMHO) but maybe worth a look.

Obstetric Anaesthesia

'Why Mothers Die' - Report on Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths in the United Kingdom 1994-1996
The full text is available online- the above link takes you to the contents page but you may be most interested in Chapter 9 : Deaths associated with Anaesthesia.

Anesthesia for the Pregnant Patient by Eveline Faure
Covers physiology & pharmacology as well. From DACC Chicago site.

Labour Analgesia by Peter Duffy
Review of techniques of intrapartum analgesia. This 50 page PDF file is most useful if printed out & read. The related PDF slide show is also highly recommended - may take a while to download if you don't have cable access.
Intrapartum Complications by RD Elliott
This is a short set of clinical obstetric scenarios. The Preterm Delivery scenario is brief but well done.

Paediatric Anaesthesia

Paediatric Anaesthesia Review by Lyn Rusy & Elmira Usaleva
'This article outlines the essential principles of safe paediatric anaesthesia covering the basics of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology emphasising the differences which exist between adults and children'

The Application of Basic Science to Practical Paediatric Anaesthesia by Kester Brown
"This paper will attempt to show how a sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and psychology of infants and children and how they differ from adults helps to improve their care during anaesthesia and the perioperative period."

Perioperative Fluid Management in Infants & Children by Iris Kuhn

Regional Anaesthesia

Nerve Blocks for Anaesthesia and Analgesia of the Lower Limb - A Practical Guide: Femoral, Lumbar Plexus, Sciatic - by Simon Morphett,
'The purpose of this guide is to provide a detailed, step by step description of how to safely and reliably perform nerve blocks for surgery and pain relief on the lower limb, for the non-specialist anaesthetic practitioner'

Caudal Epidural Anaesthesia by Bela Vadodaria & David Conn
'Caudal anaesthesia has been used for many years and is the easiest and safest approach to the epidural space. When correctly performed there is little danger of either the spinal cord or dura being damaged.'

Recommendations for Neuraxial Anesthesia & Anticoagulation
This document was developed by a Consensus Conference of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia in 1998

Vascular Anaesthesia

Vascular Thoracic Anesthesia Manual
From the Dept of Anesthesia & Critical Care in Chicago. Has protocols for various procedures but concentrates on practical matters.

Section B: General Aspects

Anesthesia Educational and Reference Resources and Materials on the Internet
A list of links from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Links are of variable quality. Site is worth a look..
Anesthetic Risk, Premedication & Choice by David J. Stone
On the University of Virginia site. Well organised summary
Blood, Fluid, and Electrolyte Replacement by Karen J. Schwenzer
On the University of Virginia site. Succinct summary covering the major points.

Clinical Management of Diabetes Mellitus during Anaesthesia & Surgery by Gordon French
'Diabetes is a condition where the cells of the body cannot metabolise sugar properly, due to a total or relative lack of insulin. The body then breaks down its own fat, proteins and glycogen to
produce sugar, resulting in high sugar levels in the blood (hyperglycaemia) with excess by-products called ketones being produced by the liver."

Anaesthesia and Chronic Renal Failure by Penny Stewart (Aust) & Debbie Harris
'Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) may be caused by primary renal disease or by systemic diseases which also affect the kidney. A decrease in nephron function occurs and can lead to a typical clinical pattern'

End Points of Resuscitation by Mark Calkins
"Successful resuscitation of the trauma patient in the emergency department, the hemorrhaging patient in the operating room or the septic patient in the intensive care unit was once guided using only simple vital sign means. However, is a relatively normal blood pressure, heart rate and urine output enough?"
12 Lead ECG library
An electrocardiogram (ECG / EKG) is an electrical recording of the heart and is used in the investigation of heart disease. This library is a collection of realistic looking recordings which will help improve your ECG skills.
ASA Syllabus on Geriatric Anesthesiology
Multi-author. Described as a work in progress. Current version (Jan 2002) is 78 pages.

Section C: Applied Basic Sciences
