Q1: No-one can answer for you your satisfaction in any field. I suspect the majority of
people on this BB (will be biased &) find immense satisfaction, interest,
excitement...blah,blah, blah, in our choice of anaesthetic/ICU. There's BS in any field
but personally, I love it so much, I can't see myself doing anything else.
Q2: The monietary answer is correct. Surgeon's income can easily double that of an
anaesthetist.....even if you subtract the extra overheads, indemnity, etc...
The non-monietary remuneration is another thing...Flexible work-hours, no
ward-rounds, no rooms, no follow-up with difficult patients, one patient at a time, one
workplace at a time.
The renumeration for VMOs averages $100,000 pa for each weekday over the
course of one year. (i.e. Work 52 Mondays = $100,000, work 52 Tuesdays, another
$100,000). I personally am pretty happy with my 3.5 day/week....which is a 350%
payrise with a >30% drop in work-hours since I got my ticket.
Overall, ask yourself what you value most:
Chopping vs. tubing
Amount of life outside of work vs. how much of work encroaching into your life
How much money you need vs. how much money can you potentially earn.
